Last Thursday, fans from Argentina gathered at the United Kingdom Embassy at the fifth annual event hosted by the British ambassador, Mark Kent, alongside Bloomsbury and FanCon. From 6 o’clock until 9, adults and kids that were able to get a ticket enjoyed the many activities held at the embassy’s gardens. Harry Potter Book Night is celebrated simultaneously in cities around the world.
People were already waiting outside the building since early in the afternoon, in a line filled with uniforms from the different Hogwarts houses (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff) and cosplays of the many characters the Harry Potter world has. It was estimated that 1500 persons would be attending the occasion.
On this occasion, the theme chosen was the Triwizard Tournament, the competition that takes place in the fourth book “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” Many of the activities that were carried out followed the theme, with a representation of the gala dance among the students of the Beauxbatons, Durmstrang and Hogwarts schools; makeups of dragons and mermaids, and even members of the “Argentine Quidditch League” invited those present to play a game.
Once everybody got in, the public could experience different stations, from eating the very famous Chocolate Frogs or a tasty house muffin to playing in a Virtual Reality station. Other wizarding activities included letting the selection hat tell you what house you belong to and knowing more about it; getting your picture taken to be on the cover of the Daily Prophet, and even walk around the book stands held by Kel.
People could also enjoy being read a chapter of the fourth book by Máximo Morales, an argentine writer. Moments later, the famous Yule Ball was held at the main stage, where two dancers performed a piece of ballet. Around seven thirty, everyone gathered at the main stage to participate at the Goblet of Fire Trivia. Fifteen lucky ones were chosen to answer questions about the fourth book and get the chance to win prizes, including purchase orders for bookstores and the cup from the Triwizard Tournament as the first prize.
Finally, around eight, the final activity began: the cosplay contest. Characters from students from the different houses to Hagrid, Professor McGonagall and Sirius Black participated in the competition to also win book purchase orders. After the presentation, the judges gave some honorable mentions and awarded the first prize to the kid that went dressed as Hagrid, personification included. The event concluded at 9.
